You may have planned everything for your next big move, except for one thing; the fridge. So, what’s the best way to safely move your fridge to your new home? Fridges – particularly modern ones, are enormously big and bulky, not to mention expensive, and you may have heard the numerous horror stories about people who have accidentally ruined their fridge during the move. The good news is, seeking the help of professional furniture removalists can take the burden off your shoulders and eliminate the risk of accidental damage. However, it’s important to understand that even if you do enlist professional assistance for moving your fridge, there are certain things you need to do to move your fridge safely.

1) Turn off the power supply on the night before moving

By doing this, you give time for the evaporator to defrost. This is one of the necessary steps, as it lets the oil and other necessary fluids settle instead of flowing through the compressor. If your fridge is equipped with an automatic ice maker, disconnect the hose and remove the ice to avoid the chance of spilling water or creating further damage.

2) Remove all perishable items and disinfect your fridge

Store only the amount you need, which is the first step to making your fridge ready for relocation. Along with this, you need to disinfect your fridge, as a fridge that is turned off can generate heat that can stimulate the production of dangerous microbes, if the fridge surface is unclean. It not only creates a foul odour, but also causes contamination when you place food inside it.

3) Don’t forget to remove the shelves

Your refrigerator shelves no doubt have a number of items stored in them. If your fridge isn’t properly secured during transit or if you accidentally bump it while moving it onto your truck, the shelves may break. Always remove them and cover them with protective wrap, which can be a blanket, bubble wrap or packing paper.

4) Seal the fridge door with tape

To prevent the accidental opening of the fridge door, be sure to tape the doors securely to prevent them from swinging.

5) Ensure your fridge doesn’t scratch the floors

Refrigerators generally don’t have castors, so you need to use something that can help the fridge more easily slide along the floor. A sturdy strap, cardboard or a sheet underneath the fridge can help to achieve this. Be sure to swing the fridge back and forth and keep sliding the item underneath.

6) Use protective wraps and blankets

Make sure you have quality-packing wraps that can protect your fridge from the sudden jerks experienced during the transit. After wrapping the fridge with professional wrapping paper, give it added protection by using a blanket. Secure the blanket to the fridge with sturdy packaging tape. While securing the blanket, make sure the tape only touches the packing wrap, not the fridge, otherwise the tape could leave an unsightly mark upon it.

Final word

To cap things off, just make sure you don’t make the grave mistake of attempting to move your fridge on your own. Safely moving a large fridge requires more than one person, and our removalists in Tweed Heads arrive as a team, with a team member operating the trolley while another helps to load the fridge onto the trolley. As soon as you get the fridge on the trolley, make sure you fasten it with a quality strap. Professional removal teams always have a supply of quality moving equipment on hand, to handle fragile items as well as big and bulky items such as refrigerators.

I was deeply impressed by Pat's thorough & kind communication style when I made some inquiries. I had never experienced such friendly & informative responses from any other removalist companies I contacted before. On the day, Pat's guys arrived right on time. Te & the team did an amazing job for me. They were all very courteous and brilliantly fast & smart. I have hired many removalists before and experienced them stretching out time, damaging my furniture, and stopping work & smoking cigarettes for ages when I wasn't on-site. Pat's guys Te & the team worked incredibly hard and got the job done very well in half the time other companies' guys would have. I can highly recommend Richards Removals. Richards would tremendously reduce the enormous stress & hassle of your relocating. Pat, Te & the team, thank you very much!!

I would highly recommend using Richards, they moved me from my home into a storage unit. The two young men completed the move without an issue and in very efficient time. Ash and Jake were very personable and polite. I am using Richards again to move from the storage unit to the new house and have requested these two young gentlemen do the move. I was asked by a neighbour could I recommend someone for their move in January so I of course said Richards.
